    Grade 11 Courses

    A Grade 10, 11 or 12 course in Applied Skills (ADST)/Arts Education is required for graduation.

    Computer Programming 11

    In Computer Programming 11, students will learn the basics of computer programming in Python and the fundamentals of computation and get the opportunity to implement their own Python functions. The course concludes with a final project component where students showcase their new skills.

    Required Prerequisite: Science 10 or Math 10


    Engineering 11

    Engineering 11 is a course designed to challenge students to solve real-life engineering problems. The course overviews the engineering process and history and tools of engineering. It also includes the tie-ins of math and physics in engineering and engineering techniques. Engineering – solving the world’s problems one at a time!

    Required Prerequisite: Science 10 or Math 10


    Marketing & Promotion 11

    This course is designed to introduce the basic marketing principles, practices, and the application of these practices. In addition, students will prepare a professional marketing plan proposal, development and problem-solving skills, understand the importance of making ethical decisions, develop business etiquette, analyze possible solutions to specific business problems, and develop an increased understanding of the business world.

    Required Prerequisites: None

    A Grade 10, 11 or 12 course in Applied Skills (ADST)/Arts Education is required for graduation.


    Instrumental Music: Concert Band 11

    In Instrumental Music 11, each student is learning and practicing their own instrument of choice, sending in a monthly sample of their playing, participating in quarterly recitals/performances (if possible), and submitting a monthly log indicating daily practice time.

    Required Prerequisite: None


    Instrumental Music 11

    In Guitar 11, each student is learning and practicing the guitar, sending in a monthly sample of their playing, participating in quarterly recitals/performances (if possible), and submitting a monthly log indicating daily practice time.

    Required Prerequisites: None


    Photography 11

    Students will work through 9 thematic projects focusing on lighting, subject matter, and composition to create successful photographs. Projects include photography-based projects, critiques, artist research assignments, a history of photography series, and a photographer research project. This course was designed specifically for low-tech digital cameras or cell phone cameras.

    Required Prerequisites: None

    Career Life Connections 11/12

    In Career Life Connections, students will review and revise their digital footprint, create a network of career contacts, develop a cover letter and resume, practice interview skills, learn about workplace etiquette and safety and log volunteer hours in an area related to their chosen career. Students will complete the course by creating a Capstone Project that they will present to a panel of their choosing. Their Capstone Project will highlight their future education, career plans, and goals.

    Required Prerequisite: Career Life Education

    Encounter 11

    “Bible class,” as we call it, is more than a time for reading, discussing, thinking or debating. We have the privilege of allotting time daily for study and reflection so that we who seek God may grow to know and love Him and His ways more with each passing moment and so that we can better understand His intent and desire for our lives – that is, His desire to live His holy life through us!  This class is required for all full-time WCAS students. Not available for cross-enrollment.

    Psychology 11

    Studying psychology serves to develop a greater understanding of human development and behaviour. Students who acquire sensitivity to multiple perspectives can make reasoned judgments about the relative merits of their own behaviour, as well as the behaviour of others. Psychology 11 will introduce students to psychology and its links to developmental stages and the breadth of areas included in psychology, from learning about stress to helping students understand some career options related to psychology.

    Required Prerequisites: Science 10

    Literary Studies 11

    This class encourages students to explore their writing voice and experiment with different writing styles and techniques. They are expected to read more in-depth literature with layered meanings and plots and are exposed to poetry both for appreciation and technical evaluation. Students in Literary Studies 11 have the opportunity to research a topic of their choice to produce a first-year college-quality research paper.

    Required Prerequisites: 4 Credits Grade 10 Language Arts

    Foundations of Mathematics 11

    This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understanding and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that do not require calculus. Topics include linear and quadratic inequalities, statistics, geometry scale representations, quadratic functions and financial literacy.

    Required Prerequisites: Foundations of Math and Pre-Calc 10

    A Math 11 course is required for graduation


    History of Mathematics 11

    This pathway is designed to provide students with an understanding of the development of mathematics, and some of the important problems math has helped (and continues to help) solve. Topics will range from number systems to cryptography and include a range of cultures’ contributions to mathematics. The importance of tools and technology to the advancement of mathematics will also be noted.

    Required Prerequisites: Foundations of Math and Pre-Calc 10

    A Math 11 course is required for graduation


    Pre-Calculus 11

    This pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that require the study of theoretical calculus. Topics include quadratics, financial literacy, linear and quadratic inequalities, rational and radical equations, and trigonometry.

    Required Prerequisites: Foundations of Math and Pre-Calc 10

    A Math 11 course is required for graduation


    Workplace Math 11

    In Workplace Math 11, students study various topics, including slope, budgeting and financial literacy and 2D representations of 3D objects, and graph interpretation.

    Required Prerequisites: Foundations of Math and Pre-Calc 10 or Workplace Math 10

    A Math 11 course is required for graduation

    Physical Education 11

    This course encourages regular, enjoyable physical activity that contributes to a healthy body and mind. Students plan their own programs and choose their own activities, which might range from something as simple as walking the dog to participating in team sports. In addition to the physical activity program, written activities and readings promote and facilitate an active lifestyle.

    Required Prerequisites: Physical Education 10

    Chemistry 11

    In Chemistry 11, students study many different areas of chemistry, from the basics of the periodic table to conversions in stoichiometry (the students always have a lot of fun with this word!). We complete units on atoms and molecules, chemical reaction type, basic chemistry calculations (conversion factors and significant digits), enthalpy changes, solubility, naming of organic and inorganic molecules, green chemistry, the mole, stoichiometry, and the periodic table. This class does involve basic math, so make sure you have a calculator.

    Required Prerequisites: Science 10

    Either a Grade 11 or 12 Science Credit is required for graduation.


    Life Sciences 11

    Life Sciences 11 studies four main topics: 1) Ecology, 2) Cell Biology, 3) Plant Biology and 4) Evolution and Microbiology.

    Required Prerequisites: Science 10

    Either a Grade 11 or 12 Science Credit is required for graduation.


    Physics 11

    The study of physics aims to understand the universe around us. Why do things work the way they work? Physics 11 studies a variety of topics ranging from kinematics to  Newton’s laws of motion, waves and sound, and electric circuits. 

    Required Prerequisites: Science 10

    Either a Grade 11 or 12 Science Credit is required for graduation.

    French 11

    This course builds on French 10. Students learn to share their ideas and opinions, express feelings, and talk about everyday life. This includes students’ interests, professions, current events, and more.

    Required Prerequisites: French 10


    Italian 11

    This course builds on Italian 10 and further develops listening, writing, reading and speaking skills, emphasizing communicative competence. Language structures and vocabulary are taught through topics such as daily routine, special celebrations, and professions.

    Required Prerequisites: Italian 10


    Spanish 11

    This course builds on Spanish 10 and further develops the skills of listening, writing, reading and speaking with an emphasis on communicative competence. Language structures and vocabulary are taught through topics such as daily routine, special celebrations, and professions.

    Required Prerequisites: Spanish 10

    Explorations in Social Studies 11

    Students are introduced to a variety of historical events that have shaped society as we know it today, starting with the Cold War era of the late 20th century through to the recent September 11 attacks of 2001. Students will also have the chance to research and discover current events happening in their modern society and create various projects using their unique multiple intelligence skills.

    Required Prerequisites: Social Studies 10

    Required for graduation
